Relocating to Portland

Hi, my husband and I are interested in relocating to Portland. we have a 2 year old and wanted to know if Portland was family friendly? We also wanted to hear from parents about schools and affordable housing? I have checked out City Data but wanted to hear from people with kids. We are moving from NH but we originally hail from Vermont and NYC. Any info would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
