Kids Are Like Wine, They Get Even Better With Age

Hey all!
Just curious how everyone's teething experience has been? Thomas, who is 6 months old next week, has been really fussy for the past 2 weeks. Today he was inconsolable. I don't see evidence of any teeth yet, but apparently they can just pop up without signs (well the loud crying is one we reckon:)) So if you have any good tips/experiences please share! Thanks.

We also have used Hyland's teething tablets (got them at New Seasons). I don't know if they help with teething (since I don't actually know if Tilden has been teething) but he sure likes them and is distracted from whatever is bugging him! I've been convinced for two months that he was working on those first teeth, but what baby really teeths for that long and still no teeth?! So, now I figure that I was using that as a reason for any fussiness. Filip and I have decided that every week is full of wonder - we wonder what the heck is going on with the little guy! Anyway, I also have this little feeding thingy that is like a ring with a mesh bag on the end. It's generally for putting a piece of fruit in for the baby to gum on. I stick a piece of ice in there and Tilden LOVES sucking on it! You can find them at Babies'R'Us. Good luck!

Our baby is 5 months old and teething...when I think back it's probably been happening for over a month now. He began to get really fussy when nursing (latching on, then immediately pulling off), he's drooling all the time, chewing on everything, fussy, sucks on his gums, red cheeks (he is very fair skinned though), etc. We finally put it all together that he's probably getting teeth. We tried the teething tablets that the other recommended and they have worked great. I can just now start to feel a bump in his gums and see a white spot there. I have also heard to let them suck in a cold or frozen washcloth. Good luck with everything!

Hi! Anna, too , has been really fussy for the last four or five days. We think that her two top teeth are coming in (as you know, she already has her bottom two). She's started a new sound--kind of a whine/whimper--to tell us that she isn't feeling well. It's really sad to hear. We've been giving her Infant Tylenol and chilled teethers to help her get through it. I think we'll check out some of the other suggestions. I didn't realize that teething was going to be such a big deal!

I hope that Thomas feels better soon! Please give him a little kiss for me. :-)

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all of your suggestions! I will definitely have to try some. We have tried giving Thomas infant Tylenol as well as offering him as much 'entertainment/distraction' as we can...but sometimes it's just draining and really sad to see him suffer. I know we all went through it and survived , but that cute little whimper and sometimes shriek is hard to hear :(
I have heard that children can display signs of teething for months in advance as it's the toughest part of teething and that the actual tooth cutting through the gum actually isn't as painful as the swelling prior(go figure...)
Thanks again everyone. Have a good weekend and happy(hopefully) teething to our sweet babies!
Cheryl, I will give Thomas a kiss for you. Thanks! You give Anna one!

p.s. So Thomas has his 6 month shots next week which I imagine will only add to the 'fun' and fussiness the poor little one has been experiencing!

Hi Eleni,
Hadley has 2 teeth (cut her bottom ones at 4 months). She wasn't too fussy, in fact I didn't realize she was teething until they popped through. Once I noticed them, I started giving her the teething tablets and they did seem to help.

I am now noticing some signs and think she is getting a couple of top teeth. In our experience Hadley never liked the teething rings or anything cold (frozen washcloth, etc...) but I recently bought her a Raz-Berry Teether (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/B000JWSO9I/ref=nosim/buymybl...) and she has really taken to it. It is just like a pacifier, but she can bite to her little hearts content on it and I think the bumps feel good on her gums.

I hope this helps!

Thanks a lot , Heather! I will definitely look at getting the Raz-Berry Teether. His fussiness/pain seems to go in waves...
Cute picture btw! Hadley sure has grown! Hope you guys are having a good Summer!

Elliot started teething a week or so before she was 3 months! Her first two teeth (bottom) popped out just as she turned 3 months and now four teeth are coming up simultaneously on top (she is 5 1/2 months now)!!

She has been so cranky lately, no wonder! I have given her Tylenol and the homeopathic tablets as well as a teething liquid that came in individual dispensers (can't remember what it was called). All seems to help a bit. Poor thing. I don't want to medicate her too much, but I also want her to be comfortable! I have used the mesh bags (she is not eating solids yet so I just put in ice) and she makes the cutest face when she puts it in her mouth!

I keep trying to get a good look at her gums (they look red and swollen) but she freaks out when I go toward her mouth so not much luck there!

I keep telling myself that "This too shall pass!"

Good to read about other's experiences and I will try Heather's suggestion.

Oh, my husband came across this website the other day for teething ring necklaces ... it is a teether that you wear around your neck (perfect for us because Elliot grabs at everything on me) and it has a quick release if she pulls too hard.

I also learned about Amber Necklaces at my BAM group at Emanuel last week. We had a guest speaker and she told us that "Baltic amber is a natural pain reliever. It is fossilized resin, not a stone. So it's safe for chewing. It is recommended that the amber be worn close to the skin. When the amber becomes warm, it releases small amounts of oil. The oil is absorbed into the skin and enters the blood stream. Amber has anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties." She told us that her son went from fussy and drooling constantly to calm, no drool within days of wearing a necklace.... I am willing to try anything that is safe... so I ordered one. I can keep you posted. The necklaces are supposed to have safety features so children don't choke on them, in case you were wondering ;)

Hey all,

So I am giving a little update! We have a first tooth:) YEY!!! Pretty exciting to see it! After all of the months of excess drool we finally have a tooth:) Thomas wasn't nursing or eating very well for about 2 days prior and then I just happened to see it. He wasn't particularly fussy just not eating...I now believe everyone who said the actual 'cutting' of the tooth is the least bothersome part! I think the pressure in the gums prior to that part was the toughest part for our little one!
Thanks to all for sharing tips and experiences! I will keep you posted...
