Kids Are Like Wine, They Get Even Better With Age

Hadley has developed a nasty little diaper rash. It's her first one, so I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do besides putting diaper cream on her. The ladies at her daycare said it's really common when they start food to get a diaper rash because the chemical makeup of their poop changes.

Anyway, we have creamy Desitin at daycare, Boudreaux's Butt Paste at home and we've been applying it at every diaper change.

Is there anything else we should or should not be doing? How long does this usually last? The poor thing is screaming when the wet wipe touches her little red bum!

Poor little Hadley girl. I've heard corn starch if its a wet rash and A&D ointment if its a dry rash. If its yeast, then you need to call the pediatrician for a prescription. Be sure to let us know what works for you.

Do you use baby powder or plain old cornstarch? I thought I read NOT to use baby powder because it gets into your lungs and it's a carcinogen.....

Great idea about the naked bum in the sun! We try to give her some "nakey time" each night, but we'll have to get out in the yard this weekend.

I laughed out loud when I read that!

I didn't know you could buy cornstarch baby powder, good to know! I bet it would have been soothing to her little chafed bum.

The diaper rash has cleared, but I'm going to pick up some of the cornstarch baby powder. Hadley is switching daycares in a week and they use all cloth diapers at daycare. We may be seeing more rashes, as her bum may be going through an adjustment period. :)

Tilden had an AWFUL diaper rash with blisters when he had diarrhea during an intestinal bug. Our doctor recommended Bag Balm (usually used for sore cow udders) and it made a HUGE difference right away. We had tried both Boudreaux's and just good ol' petroleum jelly with no help at all - in fact, the rash only worsened. The Bag Balm also contains a tiny bit of antibiotic, so it prevents any infection from occurring if the rash gets too bad. You can get it at any normal drugstore. We swear by it now. Good luck to you and Hadley!

That's right! I thought you had mentioned this before! My twin sister swears by Balmex so I had John pick some up on his lunch. I'll have to send him to the store again for the Bag Balm. :)

Hi Heather -
we haven't had much diaper rash - the cloth diapers seem to let my little guys bum breathe well. I have been told for diaper rash to let their little bottoms go bare as long as possible - so in the evenings when your home maybe just go bare :)

also if it is bad enough call the doctor - I am sure there is a perscription cream that you can use to help with the pain. I have used the Boureaux's - but try the Weleda Calendula Baby cream - I think Fread Meyer has it - but I know Wild Oat's and New Seasons do - I love the stuff. My husband and i even use it for finger rashes, cuts, etc. The back of the tube een says there's a Weledas rash care product for rasj's with inflammations.

good luck! it must hurt -Robyn

Baking soda bath, I've never heard of that either but it totally makes sense!

That's why I love these discussion forums, I've learned at least 3 other things to try just for diaper rash! Thanks for the suggestions moms!
